A supremacy war between two rival cults in Calabar, the Cross River State capital

A supremacy war between two rival cults in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, weekend, turned bloody at a popular Calabar hangout on Atekong/Marian Road, when gunmen stormed the place at about 7p.m. After hours of shooting, two people were reportedly killed and many others left with gunshot wounds. The weekend battle at Atekong was the latest in the battle for supremacy between the two rival cults, which, between Thursday and Saturday, had left over eight people dead and several others with various degrees of injuries. It was gathered that the war started Thursday night, when a university lecturer, said to be a top member of one of the groups, was shot dead. The incident reportedly led to the string of killings across the city.
A reliable source disclosed that “on Friday night, one person was shot dead along Queen Duke Street and another at Harcourt by Luggard. “One more was shot dead at the popular Calabar Motor Park, Etim Edem, located close to the Atakpa Police Division, on Saturday morning. “We have just received information that one of the twins that was shot along White House Street did not die, but managed to escape with gunshot wounds and has gone into hiding.” Ms Irene Ugbo, Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, said police anti-riot squad has been dispatched round the city to ensure peace. She added: “I cannot tell you the number of dead bodies from the fight, but the police are doing their best to stop the cult war.

Senate walks out Customs boss over improper dressing

FOR not wearing complete uniform as instructed, the Senate, yesterday, walked out the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali, retd, and asked him to return next Wednesday in complete Customs uniform. Senators asked Ali to leave the plenary because rather than wear Customs uniform, he appeared in a white kaftan dress with white cap and black shoes to match.
According to them, Ali is not a sole administrator; as Customs CG, he has to be dressed as such to appear before them because anybody can wear a mufti and claim to be the NCS boss. The lawmakers disagreed with Ali that no law compels him to wear the Customs uniform as one of them recalled that Ali was one of those who got the current uniform introduced in 2004 Ali’s thorny visit to the Senate occurred as the NCS’ N8.5 billion virement request to complete its headquarters sufered a setback in the House of Representatives with the legislators querying the variation of consultancy fee from N206 million to one billion naira.
Ali, who arrived the Senate at about 9.30am was ushered into the Senate chambers at 12.05 pm and was promptly asked by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the sitting, why he was not in uniform. It took the senators some 40 minutes to deliberate on Ali’s matter before he was sent out of the chamber for what the lawmakers termed ‘’improper dressing.’’
The Customs boss who came with Customs officers who all wore uniform, was asked to leave the chamber at12.40 pm. The lawmakers had insisted on Wednesday that Ali must appear before them, yesterday, unfailingly after he had submitted a letter to the office of Senate President Bukola Saraki to explain his inability to appear at the Wednesday’s plenary.

Herdsman kills farmer in Oyo

Ibadan—THE fragile peace between herdsmen and farmers at Igbeti, Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State was ruptured, Wednesday, as one of the herdsmen hacked a farmer, Musiliu Aliu, to death in his farm. However, the leader of the Fulani in the area said the deceased was befriending the wife of the herdsman. The Chairman, Igbeti Community, Alhaji Alawode Jimoh Fasina, who disclosed that the incident happened Wednesday evening, said: “We had warned him not to allow the Fulani man in his farm because there is no way his cows would not destroy his crops. “They were together until we heard yesterday (Wednesday) that the Fulani man had hacked our man and fled.” He said the dead farmer had preserved some yam seedlings for planting at the appropriate time. But the herdsman’s cows ate some, leading to a quarrel. It was gathered that the herdsman alleged that some of his cows were stooling, suspecting the late farmer of poisoning them. He added that “our man (the farmer) said he would go and report the Fulani man to the police. But he quickly made a detour to his farm to plant the remaining seedlings. It was while doing that that the herdsman killed him.”

…..He poisoned herdsman’s cows—Police ….He had affair with herdman’s wife—Fulani leader
